Are there some basic rules that should be followed on a first date?

Are there some basic rules that should be followed on a first date? I know each date is different and people handle themselves differently, but aren’t there some rules of dating etiquette?

Most certainly and they change according to individuals as to their priority, but my dating experience and from conversations with girl and guy pals over the years have led me to believe there is a core set of basic rules to be followed here are a few:

Be on time - You actually do get a second chance to make a first impression and after you’ve done the initial meet, greet, and ask, the impression clock starts again. Make sure you arrive on time if you’re the one picking up and make sure you’re ready on time if you’re the one being picked up. There is no such thing as fashionably late, that’s something someone who is always late says to cover their rudeness.

Do not talk about your exes. If you asked, say that you’re more interested in focusing on what’s ahead and not behind. Often times, women will ask men about their exes to see how ready they are to begin another relationship or to see if they guy is still hung up on her. Men sometimes ask to see how badly a woman will bad mouth another guy. Play it cool and leave that baggage in the closet.

Don’t fight over the bill – this is more of an issue with women who want to ‘pay their own way’. While it is always smart to be prepared to pay the bill just in case of a problem, if someone invites you to dinner, let them pay the bill. You can always make the offer to pay for the next meal. Also, men, it’s not a crime to let a woman take you out to dinner especially if her pay scale is the same or above your own.

Be willing to be open so talking is more of a conversation instead of an interview. Don’t answer in monosyllables and don’t ask the questions one would ask if looking for a servant. Ask about each other’s interests, things they do in their spare time, favorite movies and the like. Relax and treat it as if you’re finding a new friend – which hopefully you are.
