Can you just get me started with a question that won't make look like a wuss or a jerk?

I need to know the first question to ask my date when we're sitting down to dinner. My friends have told me I can take her to a movie and we can speak about that, but she doesn't want to do a movie, she just wants to have dinner first because she says she wants to get to know me. I need to know how to break the ice. Can you just get me started with a question that won't make look like a wuss or a jerk?

It sounds as if you're going to be having dinner with someone who knows how to get the conversation started, but here's a questions that's a starter and doesn't place too much pressure on either of you:
So, what TV shows are you giving up to go out tonight?
Does that seem silly? It isn't. You'll find out if she watches tv and if she watches chick shows like Grey's Anatomy of if she's a Survivor kind of gal, or if she Tivo's Oprah. You can start a conversation on what she likes about those shows and what you like about the shows you like. That can take you into all kinds of conversations and tells you both what you're both like without interviewing each other.
In the event she says she doesn't watch much; you can ask what forms of entertainment she likes and how she gets her news or stays in touch. Does she read? Listen to music? It is a bona fide conversation starter for anyone who is remotely interested in talking.
Try it. You'll be surprised.
