He is threatening to take me to small claims court.

I was dating a guy, Frank, for about six months. During that time, he would buy me nice gifts on a regular basis. Sometimes it would be a bracelet, another time when I needed a car repair he paid for it. We used to email each other and in the emails, I told him he didn't have to do these things, and he responded he did it because he wanted to. Well, we broke up and he is demanding I give him money for the car repair saying that could never be seen as a gift and he is threatening to take me to small claims court. Should I fork over the money?

Geena

Dear Geena,

You might want to do it to end the situation, but you are not legally obligated to do so. If you've saved the emails stating he didn't have to be generous and his replies saying he did it because he wanted to, then he should have no legal standing. Emails are legal documents and unless he can prove he didn't send them to you, there shouldn't be a problem. But why not give him the money back?
