Top 10 Emergency Actions to take on a Date

Nobody ever said dating was easy. In fact, it can be extremely difficult to meld with another person on any substantial level. This is why going out on dates can be truly disastrous events. But fear not, there's a bag of nifty tricks you can reach into if things start to go awry.

Let's go over ten of the top emergency actions to use on a date if things start to flounder.

1: Roses are Red…
Hey, guys, you should always bring flowers on a date. And although there are many reasons to do this, one of the best is the fact that they'll save you if you're late to pick your date up. It happens. Sometimes traffic is rough, you left the house late, you can't find her house, etc. Just tell her the florist was backed up and you're very sorry. Score!

2: The Third-Wheel
If you're entering into a restaurant or a movie theater and run into friends or, much worse, and ex, how do you handle it? You don't want to sit in a group and you certainly don't want to go into detail about an ex. So the important step to take here is not to panic. Politely say hello, be honest about who it is, and move on with the date.

3: Comedic Fodder
So you've tried overly hard to be funny and are sensing that your date thinks you're a cornball? Okay, we can fix this. This is an instance where you can show some humility. Tell your date, simply, "Sorry, I act silly when I'm nervous," or something to that extent, and then shoot a compliment. This is a breath of realness that can get the date back on track.

4: Noisy Crickets
Nothing can make a date turn into disaster worse than not having anything to talk about – especially if it's a first date. If you find yourself out of topics, you can always go with the failsafe: joke about it being awkward and segue into a topic.

5: Overly Familiar
Oh, you've tried to pull a hand touch or a sneaking arm wraparound and now your date is looking a little panicked? Well, there's no taking it back at this point. It happened! The best way to save the date here is to carry on like it never did, though. Don't panic, don't retreat – just carry on with the conversation.

6: Narcolepsy
Is your date intensely boring? Hey, it happens to the best of us. Maybe you really like this person but the date is seriously putting you to sleep. This is when some energy is needed on your part. Take the reigns and act involved and intrigued.

7: Fighting Words
Sometimes people have no filter when in conversation. If your date brings up any political or religious topics, don't even try to disagree and debate. This isn't the venue. Instead, act interested but unaffiliated. This isn't a platform to speak your mind. Be respectful and try to segue to something more date-friendly.

8: Memory Lapse
It's not uncommon for some dates to be very talkative, filling you in on the details of their family, pets, hobbies, etc. One of the topics could come up, and if you've forgot some of the details it can be embarrassing and even insulting. But don't fret. Just be honest about not remembering and make a lighthearted joke, like, "I can't even remember what I ate for dinner last night." This could be a great save.

9: Backup Plan
This emergency action is preemptive on your part. You should always have a go-to story to tell or another location planned. If conversation runs dry or the venue is boring your date, you can always rely on plan B. Don't neglect this. You never know when it will be needed.

10: Long Kiss Goodnight
If you've tried to score your goodnight kiss on the first date and had your date pull away from it, don't panic. Just smile, give a little “oops” laugh, and politely say goodnight. Your date won't think you're a weirdo unless you press the issue or try it again. Instead, act as if it's all good and proceed to call the next day. It's not the end of the world.
