How to Have Fun, Inexpensive Dates Without Looking Cheap

It's a hard time for the wallet. A lot of them are looking a little emaciated. So, if you want to go on a date, but not spend a heck of a lot of money but have a heck of a lot of fun, you need to be a little creative. Here are four ideas you can consider. If any of these are not available to you, take the time to study the closest thing in your area and make generic version that works for you.

  • Boat tours of a major city can be very expensive. So can bus tours. It wouldn't be unheard of to spend $30 or more per person just to sit and take a tour. You don't get off the bus and you definitely don't get off the boat. There may or may not be refreshments and if there are, you can expect to spend almost as much for them. So, what would be an alternative?

If you live in or close to a city that has an elevated train like Chicago or New York, you can tour the city for under $10 a person. In Chicago, for instance, you can purchase a pass and put as much money on that you want and ride the train from one end of the city to another. You can get off and get back on. That means, you can start in the suburbs, go through the downtown area, and end up in another suburb more than fifty miles away. You can even go on line and see where the trains go and ask for landmarks. Find a line, pick a museum along the way, get back on the train and find a place with cheap eats for lunch, get back on and find a place like a botanic garden that offers free concerts for the price of admission. You won't need to pay for parking, which is often the highest price to pay, because you don't have a car. Then hop back on the train and head home.

  • Attend a high school production. You would be amazed at how good those shows are. It may not be Broadway, but there is something inspirational and uplifting watching generation next involved with the arts. Besides, they do a lot of shows you've seen on Broadway – there's a high school in the States doing a full production of Cats and the tickets are a measly $10 and there's no refreshment that costs more than $2.

  • Even if you aren't religious, check out the concerts and programs churches have. Some of have free organ concerts or lectures and many of them have free receptions afterward. You might find a new form of music you like or learn something you didn't know and get some good eats afterward. Should you feel guilty attending a church function if you aren't going to attend the church? No. If it's free and open to the public, take advantage of it. Besides, there's nothing to say you won't meet new people or decide to check out a service or two if you're inclined.

  • Lastly, go on a neighborhood book sale. If it is held in a major city, chances are there will be more than just books to look at. One city has a neighborhood book sale on the same street with mansions and gardens. For a small fee, you are allowed to tour the gardens and the homes. Anyone of those would be worth the price of admission, but it's a three in one grand date that doesn't cost a lot.
