Dating When You Haven't Told Your Family You're Gay By Martin Pearce
Most people find coming out to their friends and family incredibly hard, especially if their friends and family assume that they are heterosexual. Because it is difficult to come out and tell your friends and family this, you will probably be dating long before you reveal your sexuality to the people you know and love. Dating when you haven't told your family you are gay can be complicated, emotional, and can be more difficult than you might have ever imagined. You need to be honest with yourself and the people you are dating when you aren't ready to share your lifestyle with your family.
You don't have to tell your family that you are gay, this is true, but if you are close to your family you may find it very difficult to keep it from them. It's normal to want to share the news of an exciting new relationship, a blooming love, or a great date with your parents, brothers and sisters, or other family members you are close to. When your family doesn't know that you are gay it can be difficult to share this information with them without playing the infamous pronoun game or simply lying to their face. If you don't tell your family you are dating they may assume that you need to be set up with every single friend's son or daughter, and that is just another disaster waiting to happen.
If your family doesn't know that you're gay, you owe it to the people that you become involved with on any level to tell them that your family doesn't know. Having a secret relationship is something many people do not want to do, and simply will not do. Having to keep a relationship a secret is too much pressure for some people, so you should allow them to choose how they would like to proceed. Hopefully they will stick around until you are ready to tell your family.
When dating, be sure that you don't frequent the same places that your family does; bumping into them on a night out would be a terrible way to explain your sexuality to them! If your significant other gets inpatient with your inability to tell your family, try to be understanding of their point of view. Hopefully as your relationship progresses with the person you are dating you will be able to share your relationship with your family and all will be well.
