In this heterosexually inclined world, it's hard to find books, television shows, movies, and other resources that reflect the lesbian way of life. The sex education lessons you get in school don't tell you about lesbian safe sex, and they certainly don't tell you how to raise a child within a lesbian relationship. Just because you don't have enough information, it doesn't mean that you have to be in the dark. If you have any issues regarding your lesbian lifestyle, you can turn to various sources for advice.
The first things to look at are lesbian-specific books. There are a lot of them out there, although they're not available in all countries. From lesbian dating advice to bringing up children, there are books for almost every topic. There's still a limited number of books out there compared to what's available for heterosexuals, but the numbers of lesbian oriented books are growing daily. There are even lesbian sex books that will help you spice up your sex life (especially important in a long term relationship).
Going to lesbian hangouts is important. While you may think that the purpose of doing so is to pick-up women, that's not always the case. When you're hanging out in an area where lesbians are known to gather, you can act more naturally and be yourself. It's also a good way to meet new friends who can help dish out advice and who can actually relate to your issues. Hanging out with other lesbian couples is also helpful, especially if they're older and more experienced than you.
Being in touch with a support group is a good idea. Especially if you still haven't outed yourself to your family, having a support group around can definitely help you be more comfortable with the notion of being out. Also, support groups are a great source of strength during times of crisis, which are essential for lesbian couples, especially in a community with a small gay/lesbian population.
There are a lot of great resources online, and you should take a look at them. Online messageboards are especially helpful, since they allow you to talk to other lesbian couples all over the world. You can share experiences, problems, and memories. There are several, well moderated online forums that seem like a strong worldwide sisterhood of lesbian couples. These will also allow you to get to know how lesbian couples are living in different parts of the globe.
