A Summer Volunteering in South America By Simone Walker
When I headed down to South America a few years ago it was to spend a summer volunteering helping those less fortunate. I had just graduated from grad school and wanted an adventure before settling down in the real world. A couple of my friends decided they wanted to travel, too, so we booked our tickets and we headed off. When we arrived in Ecuador we were overwhelmed with the beauty and the people. Everyone was so nice and helpful and living right on the beach was amazing. We began volunteering during the days and enjoying the nightlife every night. Before long both of my friends had found summer boyfriends, but I told them they were crazy. Who wanted to date someone for just a couple months when we all knew we lived on different continents? I wasn't going to do that. I was more concerned with the beach and just having fun. Until we arrived at a Sports Bar right on the beach and I saw the bartender.
He was really hot and I wanted to talk to him. But, he only spoke Spanish and I spoke just enough to order a beer, find a bathroom, and get around. Actually having a conversation was difficult and I was embarrassed to try and talk to him. But, after I had ordered a couple beers I decided to go for it. I asked him about the music he had in my broken Spanish and he corrected me and taught me the right words. Then, we listened to many different cd's and played pool. As the bar was closing he asked if I wanted to walk with him on the beach. I decided I would since my friends were with their boys and I had nothing better to do. That night was the first night of the rest of my life. I never realized that I would fall in love and eventually marry that man, but I did.
We spend the summer hanging out and playing at the beach. He taught me Spanish and I taught him English and slowly but surely we began to get to know each other. Eventually I had to return to the United States and he stayed in Ecuador, but I promised to come back. And I did just four months later and stayed for a month. At that point we realized one of us had to move and it would have to be me since I could travel without a visa. So, I packed up my belongings and moved down to Ecuador. We were young and in love and life was wonderful. After eight months in Ecuador he proposed and we got a fiance visa for the United States. In March of 2006 we were married and in November had our first child. We recently celebrated our first anniversary and are as much in love now as ever. It really proves the point that you never know when you will find love and that many times love finds you when you are least expecting it.
