Looks aren't really all that important, but appearance is. We've visual creatures, and our technology has made it easier to set expectations of what beauty is.
Funny thing is, generally, we all agree on who or what is beautiful but we take it to heart on an individual basis.
However, we all can appreciate when someone is nicely dressed (not expensively) and makes a good presentation. And that can be done with casual, sporty, or evening dress.
Looks may get you in the door, but so does skill and other personality traits, and looks will backfire on you if you don't bring anything else to the game.
Are they important? Probably. But unless that's all anyone expects, it won't remain important for very long.
