Is an affair ever ok?

I imagine so but I couldn't tell you when. Affair has come to have different connotations so one person's cheating is another person's affair.

For me, an affair can only happen when you're married - when you're single it's cheating.

It has to have some length. A one time thing is cheating, but I wouldn't call it an affair because for me the word implies depth. Not that it would matter, I would probably react the same way to it.

Did Bill Clinton have affairs or did he cheat a lot?

Given my definition; the answer is no because you made a promise for better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness and in health and that pretty much covers everything and if you can't keep the promise or if the promise isn't being honored for you, there are remedies.
