Learn to Listen and Better Your Relationship

When you find yourself in an argument with your current mate, how do you choose handle the battle? Do you scream and shout at the top of your lungs and brutally beat your opponent over the head with your opinion?

If that is how you are handling delicate situations, you are doing it wrong and will need to better your relationship.

Gretchen Ruben, the person who wrote The Happiness Project, and who is also a blogger for the Huffington post, has recently put together a handful of useful phrases that can turn your full on verbal attacks into a useful and constructive fight. Here is a compilation of the best of them so that you can begin to better your relationship with your mate.

"You don't have to solve this – it helps me just to talk to you." Are they consistently complaining that you are whining? Then this one will fit perfectly, it informs them that you need someone to talk peacefully to instead of someone who is going to constantly be apposed to what you are trying to accomplish. It's also a cleverly disguised compliment.

"Please try to understand my point of view." Empathy, more often than not it is the first thing to mysteriously disappear when an argument begins. As the fight is drawn out, more profanities and verbal sparring will occur, which leads to everyone becoming very narrow-minded. If this card is played early in the argument you may be able to get at the core of the matter with your partners feelings intact.

"This is important to me, please listen." One would naturally assume that since people have ears, that they would use them to listen, right? Wrong. During a fight, the vast majority of people are too busy “carefully calculating” their next move to listen to such useless jibber-jabber from their opponent. When you decide to attempt this phrase give it a few seconds to kick in before you follow up with something you wanted to get through to them.

"This isn't just your problem, it's our problem." These words can easily switch up the teams in this all out brawl. In an instant it can go from you two combating each other, to working with each other to take down the problem.

Don't forget to cooperate with your partner should they try to calm the situation. If you use these correctly then you will begin to better your relationship.
