Healthy Dating: Do You Need Professional Help?

Finding and keeping a healthy relationship in today's world is a lot harder than it used to be in years past. Or is it? With an exponentially growing self-help and therapy industry, the so-called perils of dating are magnified and the potential solutions have increased tenfold. And whether you believe in the industry or not, just remember: the entire operation is contingent on you actually having a problem.

The self-help industry is undoubtedly the most blatant in its attempt to sell you on certain methods. In essence, most systems work like an inverted pyramid scheme, where you must sign up for 'team you.'

You buy the books and attend the seminars, amp up your self-respect, and suddenly you're supposedly equipped to face the dating scene and land any partner you have your eye on. But feeling good about yourself only helps yourself – not to mention the risk of appearing too confident or even too sappy to have anyone come within 50 feet of you.

Therapy is another monster entirely. The end result is the same, confidence in yourself so you can open up to others, but the journey is far more difficult, financially straining, and perhaps even life threatening with the different medications doctors love to prescribe today.

From the outside looking in, whatever happened to good old-fashioned trial and error? When you fall off the horse, you get back up again. You don't run around crying about how horses hate you while seeking out an animal whisperer to give you inside knowledge.
When it comes to successful dating, it's about finding someone who melds with you, not about changing who you are to become the one-size-fits-all mate of anyone out there.

Whether you're trying online dating, speed dating, or asking your friend's spouse to set you up with her sister, the only real key to dating and forging strong, lasting relationships is compatibility. That stuff's not found in books or through lying down on the couch. It's not in 'you' at all; it’s the combination of you and your perfect partner.
