Everyone in America expects to get a
diamond ring
when they are asked for their hand in marriage, but what is the origin and altercations to this now extremely common tradition in the United States? Originally, rings were placed the fourth finger because it was believed that the fourth finger on the left hand contained the "vena amoris" which means the vein of love. In the Victorian ages, the tradition ring was called the Regards ring, in which the initials of the precious gems that were used spelled out the word 'regards'. Another Victorian tradition was the Dearest ring in which the word Dearest was spelt using the first letter of every jewel.

Another tradition of the engagement ring was that the ring was complied of a set of six stones. These six stones represented the joining of two families. The
birthstones
of the bride's parents and the bride were placed on the left side of the ring, and the birthstone's of the groom and his parents were places on the ring. In these specific engagement rings, it was common for the rings to contain a piece of the groom's hair inside a cavity under the gems.

In modern Western culture it is most common for an engagement ring, which usually is a

, to be worn by the women on her left hand. This ring is an indication that the woman is engaged to be married. The engagement ring is now commonly known as a formal agreement to the future marriage between two people. While in the United States it is tradition for only the women to where an engagement ring, in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Germany, it is common for both the man and the woman to wear engagement rings. However, the rings that the men wear are also used as the wedding ring.
