How Wedding Favors Have Become a Beloved Tradition

Wedding favors have been a tradition for hundreds on years, through out many of the world's countries. People give guests wedding favors a gesture of appreciation for attending the couples wedding celebrations. While modern variations of wedding favors vary greatly from wedding to wedding, there are some traditional wedding gifts that date back to hundreds of years ago.

Centuries ago in France and Italy, it was common to send wedding guests home from a couple's wedding with small gifts called bonbonniere. These gifts were small boxes made of crystal, porcelain, precious stones, or metal filled with little sugar candies. Bonbonnieres and other candy treats were given to guests as symbols of passing the good luck and happiness upon their guests. These boxes of candy usually contained five almonds or pieces of sugary candy, each representing different things. The five things represented by the nuts or candies were health, wealth, fertility, happiness, and longevity. These wedding favors were also a common gift given to people leaving birthday parties or other celebrator parties, and were the first representation of today's party favors. Today's modern form of bonbonnieres is Jordan Almonds, which are today's modern version of the five nuts and sugar candy.

Many countries have their own variations of the lucky wedding favors given to guests. For example, in Italy, it is still common to get Jordan Almonds or chocolate covered almonds as a wedding favor. In Spain, it is more traditional to receive a vase filled with orange blossoms. In Holland, guests receive "bridal sugar" which includes five pieces of deluxe candy, representing the ancient traditions of wedding wishes. In America, there are no standard traditions as to what couples give their guests, which leave room for couples to me creative and express their gratitude in different ways. No matter what a person receives as a wedding favor, it can be certain that the favors represents the couples joy and happiness that they would like to share with their guests.
