According to the Greek Legend, Cupid was actually ‘Eros’ born to the goddess of beauty and sensuousness Aphrodite. Romans called Eros, Cupid and his mother Venus. Cupid as he is known worldwide is a little boy who is armed with bows and arrows. He shoots arrows which are weapons of love to humans and gods alike. Once stuck by the arrow, the heart is inflamed with desire and love.
Legend has it that Cupid’s mother Venus was jealous with Psyche, the bride of cupid as she was a beautiful human. Since Psyche was a mere mortal, she was not supposed to look up to her God husband Cupid. But she did look out of love and she had to pay a price for it as Cupid banished her from his life.
Psyche was alone with no one near her. Cupid’s mother Venus looked at her and found her chance to subject her to more torment. She asked Psyche to do different tasks which were sequentially tougher if she wanted to get her Cupid back. For the last task Venus told her to acquire some of the attractiveness of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in a little box, which she was not supposed to open. Since Psyche was a human, temptation overtook her and welcomed her destruction to death. Cupid saw his wife lying dead and was in tears because he had not recognized her love. He took her lifeless body and put it in the box. Cupid and his mother Venus were moved by the dedication of love from Psyche and understood that she only succumbed because of her being a mere mortal. In recognition of love toward Cupid, Psyche was made a goddess.
Cupid now finds his way into the hearts of million through the arrows he shoots. Cupid is represented by the shape of a heart with an arrow pierced through it. When you think about that girl who made such an impression in your life, you know that Cupid has just pierced your heart with an arrow tipped in love.
