How do you ask a girl out?

I have a pretty basic question: how do you ask a girl out? Girls seem to like me and I get the sense some of them would like me to ask them, but I just don’t know how to do it. I can speak with girls in class and as friends, but asking for a date is something different altogether and I find myself getting nervous at the thought. Can you give me any advice?

Understandably, we tend to think of dating as something different than friendship, but every successful relationship is built on a foundation of a basic friendship. It would be hard to want to spend some romantic time with someone who wasn’t, at heart, a friend. Because you already know how to speak with girls and because your instincts are telling you some may be interested, it’s a very short step for you to ask them out.

If you are interested in one of those girls who seem interested in you, simply ask her if she would like to get a soda or burger after school or on a Friday night. It doesn’t even have to have a movie attached or anything involving picking her up. Because you’re shy, you want to take a baby step. If the thought of even doing an after school meal is too much, start with walking her home without any of the other crew around. It will give you a chance to have one on one conversation, while also letting her know you think of her as more special than just a regular friend.
