If I shoot off 30 emails and get 5 back is that decent?

QUESTION FROM A READER:
I'm training to become a freelance journalist/ copywriter and I've learned from expert copywriters that a direct mailing template that generates 7-8 percent response rate is damn good.
Meaning if I send 100 mailings and get 7 responses that template was successful. Is that the same for online dating? I used to think getting 2-3 replies after sending out 30 emails was piss-poor, but is this just what I'm supposed to expect? If I see my profile got 72 views and 5 winks does that mean my profile is doing well? I know 100% is virtually unattainable but what's a successful response rate for an email template or profile?

MY ANSWER:
E, Thanks for the email. 7-8% response is AMAZING! 1% is the average, so anything else above that is gravy.
The key I find now with the way online dating is, that you need to make sure your 'template'
doesn't really look like one. The key to doing this is to make sure you keep mentioning things about her profile.
If you're getting winks, thats a good thing but you need to know how to follow up with those women effectively so that you can keep things moving forward.
I think if you sent out 30 and got back 5 thats good, but then you want to look at the ones you sent and see how you can make them better.
THAT is the key to all of this. Yes, my program will give you a huge head-start and unveil a lot of secrets that will shorten your learning curve, but you need to keep refining what you're doing.
Just keep tweaking things. It literally takes a minute to do so.
