Dealing with an Ex Online

While it's true that many people out there using online dating as a way to find love actually find it in their first go and become involved in lasting relationships, others go through more than one partner before finding their true love. All the dating advice in the world can't fix a relationship bereft of chemistry, and many people have to try, try again until they find love that sticks.

That's why it's not at all uncommon for an online dater to be browsing around for matches and run into an ex. What makes things even worse is when that ex sees you and decides to initiate conversation.

This might be the last thing you want to have happen. If it does, however, here's some good dating advice you can use for the situation.

No Past, No Future
If your ex is contacting you, there is a good chance that he or she is not completely over you. Unless you're still friends, of course, there are probably still feelings there if they're contacting you out of the blue. Don't say anything about the past and don't bring up what you're planning to do. In other words, avoid relationship talk, whether it's about the previous failed relationship or prospects for a new one.

Friends in Passing
Most dating advice articles will suggest that you don't remain friends with your ex for a wide range of reasons. Well, this one is no different. While you're speaking to your ex, there's no need to be rude. Be friendly and cordial. But keep it in passing. Don't become attached, or else you run the risk of opening that closed door.

No 'Later'
More often than not, there will still be a rather deep level of feeling for an ex. Now, whether this feeling is good or bad is dependent on the individual, of course, but rekindling and speaking with your ex will definitely dredge up the emotions. In order to move on, however, the conversation should end in a 'goodbye' and not a 'see you later.' You do not want to make this a habit, so let it be known if you must.
