Do These Five Aphrodisiacs Really Work?

By DrDating

Eat a barrel of oysters, chug some Chinese three-penis wine, be sure to stock up on garlic, and you, my friend, can be the next Don Juan.

Yeah, that sounds more like dating advice from the same drunk friend that told you it was 'okay' to clip jumper cables to the cab driver's shoulders on the way back from the bar. Funny? Sure. But it certainly did not result in anything good.
But we're not speaking about nights out with the fellas. What we're talking about here is aphrodisiacs--those substances you are supposed to ingest in order to increase sexual virility.

Do they work--do any of them actually work?

For thousands of years mankind has put its faith in aphrodisiacs to provide a little more punch to lovin'. From the ancient Aztecs, Persians and Romans to your parents in the next room while you're reading this, millions of people have tried downing some type of substance to help the fires of passion rage stronger.

The scientific research suggests that aphrodisiacs have a placebo effect, however, and that they are not necessarily causing any physical change.

Emotionally, on the other hand, if you believe in the power of something, it is bound to manifest in some form.

Can all aphrodisiacs be shams, though? Some of them might work, and we will go over five of the more popular aphrodisiacs you hear about and discuss whether they are the real deal or if they are simply sugar pills masquerading as penicillin.

Five Popular Aphrodisiacs

Oysters

This mushy jewel of the sea has long been touted as one of the most powerful aphrodisiacs known to the world. Why exactly has this strange bottom feeder been linked to such feats of sexual awesomeness? Well, the oyster gets its mythical powers from its actual look. It resembles a vagina. A pale, swollen, dirty vagina, but a vagina nonetheless.

Oysters are not the only food to resemble a sexual organ to be linked with strange powers. Many foods, especially phallic-looking foods like bananas, and even animal phalluses themselves, have been said to increase sexual performance.

Scientifically speaking, though, there may be something to the oyster myth. With high levels of zinc and the nutrient tyrosine, eating oysters can increase the production of testosterone and help produce dopamine. These changes can certainly help put you in the mood.

Nutmeg

Known to have a psychoactive effect, large quantities of nutmeg can actually get you high. You wouldn't like it. It's like a bad acid trip on The Who's tour bus circa 1968, but it does have that property.

In terms of nutmeg's effectiveness as an aphrodisiac, it has long been linked to increased sexual performance. The truth: nutmeg can assist in stimulating the circulatory system and ultimately increase blood flow. So for sex, this isn't a bad thing at all.

Mead

Also known commonly as honey wine, mead is an alcoholic drink made from berries, spices, water and honey. It has certainly been around far longer than beer and liquor, dating back to 7000 B.C. in China, and it is still a popular drink in some parts of Europe and Asia today.

As far as mead's effectiveness as an aphrodisiac, let's just say that the wine is more like liquid courage than anything. When you drink, your inhibitions fly away on those wind-soaring sheets, along with your basic motor skills and common sense. So while mead might not be a legitimate aphrodisiac, it will certainly make you feel like it's working--or you at least won't care that it's not.

Scents

This isn't one particular item but rather a range of 'seductive' scents that we have long been told have powers to put us in the mood. Unlike a lot of other aphrodisiacs you will hear about, the power of scent is well documented. Scents--aroma therapy--can treat a wide range of issues, including panic disorder and depression.

Scientific research shows that, in women, scents like cucumbers and licorice can really get the blood flowing to those special lady parts (okay, part-- singular). In men, smells like pumpkin and lavender can increase blood flow to the penis by around 40%.

A quick note: as scents and sex go, no matter what you have lying around the house, make sure to bathe properly before climbing into the sack. Genitalia smelling like gym socks will counteract any seductive scent.

Chocolate

We saved the best for last here with chocolate. Even if it proves to be the most useless aphrodisiac on the planet and we fail miserably at sex, we'll still gobble the stuff up in self pity to feel full if we can't feel happy.

At a quick glance, one would think that there has to be something to the chocolate myth. After all, love and chocolate go hand in hand, whether we're speaking about feeding our lover choco-dipped strawberries or bringing home a box of sinfully sweet treats for Valentine's Day.

Luckily, chocolate seems to be on the up-and-up in terms of working aphrodisiacs. Containing compounds like phenylethylamine and caffeine, chocolate can put you in a good mood and provide you with a boost of energy. Happy, energetic--it sounds like sex:30 to me.
