How Social Networking can Damage Relationships

By Amanda Willis

You might not think so, especially if you're using online dating to meet your perfect match, but social networking can really damage your relationship if you're not careful. The slightest bit of neglect to the attention to detail of your online life and you may end up right back where you started-as a single.

Not only is your online dating site profile considered one of your social networking pages, but you have your Twitter account, your MySpace and Facebook pages, and even various groups, forums and communities you belong to.

Here are just a few ways that social networking missteps can cause damage to a relationship:

Relationship status
Couples brought together from online dating are 'real' couples, but they're not always out in the real world. If you're getting on well with someone via a dating site (or anywhere, for that matter) and decide to update your relationship status to 'in a relationship' instead of single, you better check with them first. Likewise, if you leave it as 'single,' your new partner may have a problem with it. Discuss it either way before it bites you.

No couples-based photos
If you have been out on some real dates and have been doing the regular stuff that couples do, make sure you get your partner's permission before you start to post any pictures of your make-out sessions. Your partner might not approve of private moments becoming PDA.

Delete, delete, delete
As proper dating etiquette, you should be deleting any and all photos of you and your ex from your social sites. It's just the right thing to do, even if you're not a 'real' couple yet. Move on and show some respect.

Drunken texting
If you've had a few too many, make sure that you avoid the computer and all mobile devices altogether. Just sleep it off and talk to your partner tomorrow. Inevitably, if you text while drunk, you're going to do something you regret. It's just the ways of the world.
