How to Approach a Guy

By Brian McDonald

You could read dating advice articles until you're blue in the face, but unless they're dealing specifically with online dating, then you really can't expect success in the genre.

For example: the customary 'how to meet men at bars' advice is good…for bars. It's pretty much pointless for the Internet. In the online dating world, there's a whole other world within the world that requires a bit more patience and, if you want something quickly, a lot more motivation.

Instead of receiving dating advice about how to meet Mr. Right at the grocery store when picking up broccoli, let's focus on how to approach a guy via a dating site. These few tips will certainly come in handy.

Intelligence is Confidence
Men and women alike should always exude confidence if hoping to meet someone and hit it off. Using the Internet, however, it's hard to come across as confident. Instead, coming across as intelligent can stand in its place. Guys reading a well written, thoughtful profile, that's professional-looking and legitimate, will actually see confidence there. When approach the guy, use this principle. Be sure of what you say and how you say it.

Avoid being Racy
While it's true that guys are going to contact girls most of the time, girls still like to initiate first contact depending on who catches their eye. Don't be racy when you contact him. Introduce yourself, drop a light compliment if you want, let him know you're interested, and then get out of there.

Aim to please, not Tease
A lot of girls out there will open up online with more of a flirty 'you’re so cute' type of line. Sure, this pads a man's ego tremendously-but it also sends across the wrong message. Instead of telling a guy how handsome you think he is at first, even if you do think it, tell him more about how you like that he's the right 'type' of guy for you because of X or Y.
