Don't buy acceptance A lot of girls think that they can win their boyfriend's mother over with a nice, expensive gift. This is false, however, and mothers will be quick to pick up on the fact that you're trying to score brownie points. Instead, grab a bottle of wine for her. She might be buzzed up enough to ignore you. Don't be a parrot Of course, you do not want to be at odds with your boyfriend's mother and start any conflict, but you do not want to be a parrot either. It's important that his mother sees you as an individual woman and not someone setting out to replace her. Hell hath no fury like a mother no longer needed. Let him stand for you Overprotective mothers have a habit of asking really difficult questions. If and when this happens, answer as if you're uncomfortable with it. If your boyfriend is worth his salt, he'll step in and get the she-beast off your back for the time being. This will work out well for you, too, as she'll realize he cares for you. Don't use a crutch You may be tempted to pop a pill or to chug a few glasses of wine in order to take the edge off, but don't do this. You'll need to be focused here, and she'll definitely hold it against you if you're inebriated during the meeting.
