Im a 20 year old college student and my friends are telling me Im not normal because I dont go out on dates as often as they do. I really like my own company and I am in school to study. I have some hobbies and extra curricular activities that I enjoy and that puts me in contact with both guys and girls and I make friend easily enough with both sexes. Its just that whenever I find myself liking a guy, it never gets past the friends stage and he winds up dating someone else. My friends say I dont give off the interested vibe (I didnt even know there was such a thing!) Are my friends right? Am I abnormal?

Helen

Dear Helen

Yes, your friends are right, but that doesn't make you abnormal. This is only a problem if you want to date more and you're not. If the reason you're in school is to study and dating isn't something you want to do, then you're perfectly fine. On the other hand, if it bothers you that when you like a guy and he ends up dating someone else, your friends may have a point that you're giving the signal that you want to be friends and nothing else.

If you decide you want to date more, you may find you have to open yourself up to possibility of making someone more than a friend and doing the work it takes to find dates and the relationship you want. Until then, stay true to who you are.
