Online Dating Etiquette: Rejection

By Amanda Willis

For every successful relationship born of free online dating, another will unfortunately fizzle out. That's not in any way a knock against Internet dating. That's just a sad fact of the world - like for every baby born, someone else dies. That kind of thing is unavoidable when you're talking about millions and millions of people.

What if you're one of the relationships that have fizzled out, though? How will you handle it, and are there any etiquette rules when dealing with rejection?

In this article, we'll cover a few etiquette guidelines when dealing with rejection in the world of free online dating. We'll touch on both sides of the aisle here - the dumper and the dumpee.

Whether you've just basically met, have been chat buddies with a blossoming romance for a few weeks or even if you have a few real dates to your credit, things sometimes simply don't work out.
It's something we'll all have to face down in life, but that's still no reason that you can't be mannered when dealing with it.

For the dumper: proper etiquette here suggests you do it and get it out of the way and turn your back completely. Holding on to the idea of 'friends' is just a bad situation, especially on a dating site, and any type of long soliloquy explaining your reasons just opens the door for the dumpee to get in there and try to reverse your decision.

Don't be unfair; don't blame anyone for the split. Simply tell the person that you're not feeling it on the same level - you don't think anything can come of it and you need to walk away. Then, do what you said and walk away.

In fact, if you're only on the level of chat buddies with this person, you don't even owe an explanation at all. Simply walking away will give them the hint and it falls perfectly within proper etiquette.

For the dumpee: don't be clingy here. You will have to face facts that, at this point and time, free online dating didn't work out for you. That doesn't mean you still can't show proper etiquette and refrain from bombarding the person with messages.

People simply have to move on sometimes, and although your inclination is going to be to take it personal, because it is rather personal, this is something you must accept. I know it's a cold way to look at it, but you'll simply have to try again with another single.
