Top 10 Topics to Avoid on a Date

It's important to know that scoring a first date doesn't mean you've hit a homerun. In fact, it's not even technically to first base. So, always remember to be on your best behavior and try hard not to annoy your date.

Nothing says pure disaster like arguing with your date in the middle of dinner or having them get up and walk out on you.

So, to avoid this, we must avoid certain topics. In no real order, let's go over ten topics to avoid when on a date.

1: Green Peace
It doesn't matter if you're more right wing than Hitler (okay, that would matter!) or if you're to the left of Obama, leave your politics and worldview safely tucked inside your head. Even if you happen to share similar politics, it's still not a topic for a date!

2: All Hail Zeus
Just like with politics, keep your mouth zipped up about religion. Maybe your date worships the winter solstice while you rub ashes on your head one Wednesday a year and parade around like you're normal. Odds are you know the person's religion already, so there's no point in quoting scripture or waxing righteous while on a date.

3: Boneheads
Guys, can we go an hour without making any offhand jokes about sex or your sexual prowess (or lack thereof)? Would it really kill you to talk about something else? Jeez, act like you've seen people before, caveboy.

4: Wahh-Wahhh...
Okay, that might be poor inflection, but think of it as the sound Debbie Downer makes. Oh, you know the tune? Okay, then; don't go singing it! Your partner might care about your problems; your date does not. No one wants to hear how bad you have it.

5: #1 Stunna
Even if you have a lot of things to be proud of, you should avoid bragging at all costs. You're not a "stunna," fake Lil Wayne, so give up the ghost and be modest. Look, your date is interested. They wouldn't be sitting there if not. Now's no time to get all wee-wee'd up and start bragging.

6: Broken Chains
So you've just got out of a bad relationship and are thankful to move on? That's a good piece of information. But it belongs on your dating profile and not used at convo fodder on your date. Don't start talking about how your ex ball-and-chain was a chop-buster.

7: Dead and Buried
They say chivalry is dead. Okay, they also said global warming would kill us all by 2000. So they're 1 for 2, not bad. But chivalry really is dead, and it will just be overkill if you continuously compliment your date. Look, dropping a "wow, you look amazing" is okay, but harping on how your date looks is not a good topic. It makes you look desperate and easy.

8: Stick Your Left Foot In
During a date, it's time to put your best foot forward. So you definitely don't want to start talking about any bad habits you have. Are you a chain smoker? Don't mention it. How about any nasty proclivities you have? Definitely not! Be on your best behavior here.

9: Faux News
A date is no time to get into current events, the weather, or any other news-like topic. Not only are these things borings, but this particular topic is also a catalyst to at least three other topics on this list. Avoid being a newscaster and get on with your date.

10: Marry Me!
Guys and girls who come across showing too much interest on a first date usually don't make it to a second. It's not the best idea to seem clingy, possessive or familiar here. It's only a first date - not a proposal dinner. Act accordingly.
