A Dozen Dates: How to Get Ready for Speed Dating

Like it or not, first impressions last - to a considerable point. Speed dating supports this fact, and makes it more convenient for daters everywhere. If you're not feeling the vibe with the girl across from you, you only have to spend three more minutes with her. Once the speed dating bell rings, you can move on to the next date. And if you happen to like this one, you can simply tick her name on your dating sheet and hope to get a second date.

But before you get that second chance, she better like you as much as you like her. Here are some ways for you to make sure that happens:

Days before the big night, be sure to brush up on your communications skills. You might want to collect your thoughts on your interests. You don't have to make up interesting hobbies, but you'd want to have something ready to talk about in case she asks. If you like art, what are the things that you've created lately? If you like movies, what makes your favorite movie good? Think of things to ask your date as well.

You don't have to be smart. But you can be smart. It's common knowledge that most girls are impressed by smart, opinionated guys. Read up on current events in case you need an emergency topic to discuss with someone in the speed dating event who has absolutely no common ground with you. What's the latest political issue? What's the newest technological breakthrough? Isn't it amusing how everyone walks the streets with music plugged into their ears? Even if you can discuss current events, don't forget to be careful about sensitive issues. You are still getting to know each other, and you're not sure yet what ticks her off. If you still don't connect, don't push it. Move on to the next girl. Speed dating solves the problem of awkward silence by making each session as short as three minutes.

Unless a dress code is specified by the event organizer, wear something you're most comfortable in. Be sure not to be so shocking, though. You don't want to scare away a girl due to first impressions. The key word would be: interesting. Wear something that is nice enough but that doesn't drown your personality in a sea of tie-wearing men.
